Cardinale, 21, appeared at Teesside Crown Court via a video link, where a date for a further hearing was set for April 12 to allow time for medical reports to be completed.

A police cordon remained at the scene for a number of days while forensic investigators worked at the scene.

Cardinale’s trial is listed for July this year and he was remanded in custody.

Nino worked as a table games dealer at the Grosvenor casino in Stockton and was being visited by his fiancée of three years at the time of the alleged murder.

Following their deaths, well-wishers laid flowers outside the flats where the alleged incident took place.
